Shoichi Hasegawa (1920~)
Born in Yaizu City, Shizuoka Prefecture.
Studied at the Kokugakai Institute in Suginami, Tokyo. Held his first solo exhibition in Tokyo in 1957 and another at the Tokyo Gallery in 1959.
Traveled to France in 1961 and studied the technique of multi-color etching on copperplate at Hayter's studio, where masters like Picasso and Miro also learned printmaking.
From around 1963, he exhibited in numerous international print exhibitions. He also held solo exhibitions in Paris, gaining attention as an unconventional artist.
His works depict fantastical inner landscapes with delicate lines emerging in white against subtle overlaps of colors such as yellow, red, purple, and green, created through his unique printing techniques.
Major museums that have collected his works include the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, the Bibliothèque Nationale de France, the French Ministry of Culture, and the Museum of Modern Art in New York.
