Kitaguni (Northern Country) refers to the Yoshiwara pleasure district, named so because it was located north of Edo Castle. A book of haiku called Goshiki Sumi (Five-Colored Ink) became popular, and this name was used as the title for a series of five items. This work, one of the five, depicts an Oiran, a high-ranking courtesan among the professions working in Yoshiwara.
