The Roland GK-3 is a divided pickup that can be attached to a regular electric guitar to freely control guitar synthesizers and modeling devices. It is a unit that essentially expands the guitar into a different kind of instrument, and its great appeal is the vast expansion of sound creation possibilities when combined with GK-compatible devices such as the Roland GR-55 or Roland VG-99.

The exterior is quite compact, and the first thing that catches the eye is that it is approximately 30% thinner than previous models. It blends well with the guitar body and is designed to interfere less with guitars equipped with tremolos, which is a welcome feature. The pickup section is structured to pick up string vibrations individually, and it also adopts variable curvature (Arched-top structure), making it easier to fit a wide range of guitars, from Strat-type to Les Paul-type.

In terms of functionality, the biggest point is that it operates in a completely different world from regular pickups, capable of MIDI-like control and even triggering synthesizer sound sources. By analyzing each string individually, the separation of notes is extremely clear even when playing chords, and when playing piano or string-like sounds, you truly feel a sense of going beyond the guitar. Furthermore, since the device can be directly controlled by switches and volume knobs on the body, it is interesting that it can be operated intuitively even during live performances.

In a nutshell, it can be described as an interface for expanding your guitar. Rather than producing sound on its own, it might be more accurate to say it's a device for upgrading the guitar you already own.
