Sanukite stone from Kagawa (marbled pattern)
The origin of the stone flute dates back to the middle Jomon period, approximately 5,000 years ago.
At that time, the stone flute was revered as a sacred instrument that connected people and gods. It is said that the sound of the Nohkan (a type of transverse flute) used in Noh theater was modeled after the sound of the stone flute. Since natural stones become musical instruments, they have been passed down to the present day in the same form as ancient instruments. However, they are only played by a very small number of musicians and do not seem to be widely popular among the general public.
