Kagura Bell
This is a Kagura-suzu (sacred dance bell) that a shrine maiden holds and rings when performing a dance during Shinto rituals.
It is arranged in three tiers from top to bottom, with 3 small bells on the top tier, 5 on the middle tier, and 7 on the bottom tier, for a total of 15 small bells. It is attached to a wooden stick wrapped in red paper and was shaken to produce sound during dances.
It was likely used in Kagura (sacred music and dance) performed before the gods to invite them, purify the space, or express gratitude and prayers.
This item was long owned by a collector in Nagoya and was discovered during the organization of their estate. It is an ancient and elegant Kagura-suzu that produces a clear, refreshing sound when shaken.
