The main ways to use garden leaf mold are as a soil conditioner mixed into the basic soil, and as a mulching material spread on the surface. When mixing with soil, use a basic ratio of 2 parts soil to 1 part leaf mold, adjusting the amount according to the plant's growing environment. As a mulching material, spreading it about 3-4 cm thick on the soil surface provides benefits such as heat and moisture retention, weed suppression, and prevention of pathogen dispersal.
For mixing with soil (soil improvement)
Purpose:
To adjust the balance of drainage, water retention, and aeration, soften the soil, and activate microorganisms.
Mixing example:
Basic soil: Mix basic soil and leaf mold in a 2:1 ratio (2 parts soil: 1 part leaf mold).
Improving garden and flower bed soil: Mix deeply into the soil using a hoe or tiller, at a rate of approximately 3-5 kg per square meter.
Points:
Be careful, as adding too much leaf mold can make roots unstable or cause root rot.
Use only fermented and fully ripened leaf mold, as immature leaf mold will deplete nutrients in the soil (nitrogen starvation).
After mixing, it is recommended to let the soil settle for about 2 weeks to 1 month before planting.
For spreading on the soil surface (mulching)
Purpose:
Heat and moisture retention, prevention of drying, suppression of weed growth, prevention of pathogen dispersal.
Method:
Spread a layer of about 3-4 cm thick on the soil surface around the base of the plants.
Points:
In winter, it maintains an appropriate soil temperature with its heat and insulation effects, while in summer, it suppresses drying and rising ground temperatures.
It also has the effect of preventing rainwater mixed with pathogens from directly hitting the plants.
