Pilipili Mbuzi is a chili pepper that is very popular in Africa! It is widely cultivated in East and Southern Africa and is characterized by its fruity aroma and intense spiciness. In the local language, piripiri means chili pepper, and mbuzi means goat. There are many theories about the origin of its name, such as goats liking its leaves or it being essential for dishes with strongly flavored goat meat.
This chili pepper belongs to the Capsicum chinense species and is similar to habanero, but as you can see in the photo, its fruits are two to several times larger than habanero. While there are various theories, it is speculated that chili peppers favored in Africa were selected over a long period, leading to the development of the Mbuzi variety as a fixed strain. Regardless, Pilipili Mbuzi is a very attractive chili pepper.
