Let's all bring back the culture of organic indigo together ?
Seeds are harvested after the flowers have fully bloomed and naturally dried to brown (this improves germination rate). These are seeds of love, filled with 10 years of experience and dedication ?
After growing in Oita Prefecture for 8 years, I moved to Okinawa and have been growing them here for 2 years, connecting the seeds and life.
They are grown by the sea in Okinawa, with sea breezes and abundant sunshine, and have overcome typhoons multiple times, possessing strong vitality ◎
Please connect them to your land as well ?.*?
Here's a rough but recommended way to grow them: sow seeds (3-5 per pot) in small pots (approx. 5-10cm diameter) or cell trays. Once they sprout, cut off all but the strongest seedling at the base.
When they reach about 15cm, pinch the tips (to encourage tillering) and transplant them to slightly larger pots (approx. 10-15cm diameter). Once they grow to about 20-30cm, transplant them to your garden or field.
They generally grow fine without fertilizer, but if the soil is poor, add a little rice bran or oil cake after transplanting. Using organic fertilizer instead of chemical fertilizer allows you to enjoy organic indigo dyeing! Good for the earth ◎
Indigo is generally a very hardy plant, so it's usually fine ? Anyone can easily grow it ?
Once grown, around July, cut the plant about 10cm from the base, take the upper parts, and use the leaves for fresh leaf dyeing or pounding dyeing.
Save the rest for sukumo (fermented indigo) by drying and storing. Around September, when it grows again, harvest it in the same way (second harvest).
Then, to produce seeds, it will grow again and bloom. Wait until the flowers wither and turn brown before the frost, then collect the brown flower parts to harvest seeds for next year ?..:*?゜
