★ Can be grown in planters.
? Cultivation Period
?Sow seeds in pots in early April, grow seedlings, and transplant to the field in early May.
?Harvest from July to August.
? Sowing and Seedling Cultivation
?Sow 2 seeds per pot (9-12cm size), pressing them in about 1cm deep. Lightly cover with soil and water thoroughly.
?Since seedlings are grown during the cold season, use insulation materials to create a warm environment.
?Thin seedlings to one plant when true leaves begin to appear, aiming for seedlings with 4-5 true leaves.
? Soil Preparation
?Like other cucurbits such as watermelon and pumpkin, they dislike dryness and excessive moisture.
?Aim for a plant spacing of approximately 70cm.
?The ideal pH is between 6.0 and 6.5.
? Fertilization
?Excessive fertilizer in the early growth stage can lead to vine-bunching (tsuruboke).
?Limit base fertilizer and supplement with regular top dressing.
?Use a balanced compound fertilizer, such as bokashi fertilizer.
?Apply top dressing between plants two weeks after transplanting. Thereafter, apply top dressing to the shoulders of the ridges every half month.
? Transplanting
?When seedlings have 4-5 true leaves, transplant them to the field with approximately 70cm spacing.
Water thoroughly after transplanting.
? Staking
?The petioles are hollow and can easily break in strong winds. Broken leaf wounds can allow pathogens to enter.
Therefore, install stakes as the stems and leaves begin to grow.
? Artificial Pollination
?When female flowers open, pollinate them with male flowers.
?Since they only bloom for a short time in the early morning, perform artificial pollination no later than 9 AM. If not pollinated, the fruit will not develop.
?If the fruit does not grow large, it will rot, leading to disease spread.
