Yoshitomo Nara, born December 5, 1959, is a Japanese artist known for his eclectic works, particularly his cartoon-like paintings of melancholic children and animals. After earning his Bachelor of Fine Arts and Master of Fine Arts degrees from Aichi Prefectural University of the Arts, he studied abroad at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf in the late 1980s, drawing inspiration from both Eastern and Western cultures throughout his career. Nara's childhood was during a post-war era in Japan where there was increasing exposure to Western pop culture such as manga, Disney animation, and pop music, which is often cited as an early influence on his work. While he has always stated that his work is not drawn from Japanese manga, his distinctive portraits with large eyes often prompt art critics to draw parallels between the two. Instead, he argues that by pairing innocent children with cynical expressions and incongruous objects (such as sharp knives), he elevates his work to another spiritual level, reflecting on important issues of religion and philosophy.

Yoshitomo Nara has many devoted followers and has held numerous solo exhibitions worldwide, including a major retrospective from 2003 to 2005 that traveled to many locations. Nara's works are held in the collections of many major museums, including the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Art Institute of Chicago, and the National Museum of Art, Osaka.
