呉大澂 (Wu Da-cheng)

A politician, calligrapher, painter, and man of letters in the late Qing Dynasty, China. A native of Wu County (Suzhou, Jiangsu Province). His courtesy name was Qingqing, and his pseudonyms were Hengxuan and Kaku-sai. He became a Jinshi (successful candidate in the imperial examinations) in 1868 and rose to the position of Governor of Hunan. In 1894 (Guangxu 20), he was defeated at Shanhaiguan during the First Sino-Japanese War and retired from office. From a young age, he excelled in seal script, and in his middle age, he became proficient in Zhou script and was skilled in seal carving, collecting and expertly appraising bronze and stone artifacts. His paintings often depicted landscapes and flowers. In 1862 (Tongzhi 1), during a trip to Shanghai, he participated in the Pinghua Society Calligraphy and Painting Exhibition. His published works include Shuowen Gujiu Bu, Hengxuan Suojian Suozang Jinxuan Lu, and Kaku-sai Jigu Lu.
