The buckle is located right next to the bag, making it easier to handle than bags with buckles on the back. Also, the loops (on both sides) near the buckle were convenient for attaching carabiners and other items. The cross-section is close to a triangle (slightly narrower at the bottom), so the part near the waist is thin and less likely to interfere with walking.
